We learned a ton today:
AM/Pm time: We worked on reading fluency. There are some groups working on expression and others are learning about phrasing. Please make sure that students are reading out loud at home for their 20 mins. reading time.
Math: We learned the difference between prime and composite numbers. Prime numbers are the numbers that only have 1 factor pair: 1 x that number. Examples are 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, etc). Composite numbers have more than 1 factor pair. For example, the factor pairs of 8 are 1 x 8 and 2 x 4. There are two pairs therefore the number 8 is composite. Then, we learned how to make factor trees to help us find the prime factorization of any number. There is homework on this (you can print it up if you weren't in school today).
Computers: Students practiced their typing skills and played a few games from the Hidden Hollow computer games site.
Spelling: We had a pretest and worked on our spelling packets a bit.
Read ch. 10 from Heir Apparent.
Science: Students learned what an atom is. We looked at the periodic table and found the symbol names of several common elements. For example Oxygen is "O" and Hygrogen is "H". We also learned that everything in the earth is made of combinations of these elements. For example, water is 2 hydrogens and 1 oxygen.
