We are just moving right along. Can you believe the first week of school is already done?! Well, before you know it the year will we done and we will have had created many memories.
Here is what we did today:
Small group time: I am still working on DRAs. I was able to get most kids tested. Those that I didn't I will do first thing on Monday.
Math: We talked briefly about the powers of ten and how this is the foundation of mathematics. Then, we took our pretest for unit 1 (the computer's worked today!!!)
75% of the class got <65%. This means that we will spend an extra couple of days on this unit of place value, expanded/standard notations, and integers. I do not want to rush through this because it is fundamental to the next couple units.
Writing: We started our 1st writing unit: Personal Narratives. They learned that personal narratives are written in 1st person and is based on true facts that are told in a descriptive story-like format. We will continue to work on this for the next few weeks.
Read aloud with "Heir Apparent."
Social Studies: We learned about the word cartography and cartographer. We looked at different maps throughout history and how it has evolved into the maps that we have today. The students learned that after Columbus' discovery of the New World, explorers set out to discover new land which eventually helped the US be what it is today.
Then, we did an activity where had to locate parts/cities of a map by using longitude and latitude.
We also had our first RADD kids lesson. Have them practice their RADD stance with you.
HW:
Read 20 mins. (Fri and Sat)
Also, because of the talking problem, I am having all the students write 1 paragraph about why it is important not to talk while Mrs. Varner is talking. Then, a parent is supposed to sign it. I am hoping this assignment will help the students to understand the seriousness of this. This is due on Monday.
