Today we:
Small group: we started our centers. They are reviewing equivalent ratios/fractions, doing a Christmas reader's theatre, and different branches of our government.
Math: We discussed what is a percent value mean by dividing a 10 x 10 graph into different percentile amounts. For example, 35% means that 35 out of 100 squares are filled in. They also had to recognized that 25% is also 1/4, .25, 25:100, and 25/100. Then, we took that knowledge and learned how to find out percentiles form other amount besides 100. For example, 35% of 60 is 21.
They have a homework sheet that deals with this kind of problem solving.
Science: We had a fun activity on specialized structures and evolution by experimenting on different "bird beaks" or tools. I had the students work with different tools to see who could get the most "food". This was to help them understand the concept of hinderances that can prevent animals from thriving. This can lead to evolution. Last of all, they had to recognize these specialized structures in various animals.
Writing: Today was the last day to work on their books.
We then ended with our white elephant party.
HW:
